Let this Chapter begin

This blog was created to keep of you updated on Jamie's injuries and progress.

For those of you who weren't there to witness the event, Jamie was racing yesterday in the Formula One race at Infineon Raceway.  It was the 7th race on turn 8 where he got a bit too aggessive and lost control of his bike.  He landed on the track where he was runover by another racer.

A shout out to that racer (GoGo) as we know that this was unavoidable.  We are truly grateful for your adept riding abilities because we know if Jamie had been hit in any other location on his body, he would probably be dead or wish that he was.  Jamie and his family are eternally grateful to you.

Back to the salient event, he was airlifted to the closest hospital, Santa Rosa Memorial, where his injuries were assessed.

As we are learning, as they repair certain things they may find others.  His injuries include a pelvis, fractured in 5 places, a broken ulna, 3 broken ribs, a broken vertabrae, and two very significant wounds on his elbow and his hip.  Additionally, he has some internal bleeding, more on that later.  Initially, the main concerns were blood clots and getting enough oxygen to the lungs, so he doesn't get pnuemonia.  Last night he underwent surgery to repair the ulna, as he will need a lot of upper body strength in the near future.  Additionally, they cleaned the wounds extensively to prevent infection.

As luck would have it, Jamie was trying to get in one more race before our family reunion.  Jamie arrived to the hospital and followed shortly by his wife and 3 kids, sister and neice and brother, sister-in-law and 3 nieces and nephews.  Our kids really have no idea of the seriousness of the situation as you can see, which we feel is a good thing and were able to continue up to the family reunion location with Uncle Tommy and Aunt Paula.

We will continue to update all of you as we know more.  We cannot tell you how much we appreciate the guys in Jamie's pit, the track and medical personnel at Infineon Raceway, the helicopter team and the hospital team.  Also, most importantly all of Jamie's friends.

  5. Hi Jamie.

Hope the healing goes fast as you ride and all is good in the near future. Seeing the kids pics and knowing your Wife and others family members stress about it hurts my heart, but I know you have great support in you healing process.

Best wishes in that from all of us at the Bay Area Riders Forum.

  7. Jamie - We love you and we want you to get well. If only so we can kick your ass and tell you to stop that moto madness and relax into your couch. While there, you can join the rest of us in watching these types of crazy adventures on tv, where they belong.

Seriously, J., we are praying and rooting for you. Also sending good vibes to Gail, Elizabeth, Maisie, and Walker who's anxieties we empathize with. We want to help however we can. We can host summer camp in NYC. We can be in Cali. in a mere 6 hours. Name your task - we will do it.

In the meantime, get well. XXXOOOOOO. Hugs and abrazos,

    Lexi and Corby

  9. Jesus Jamie! You just entered the 40's! We don't race, we power walk! We don't ride motorcycles, we drive Volvos. And...we don't have free time on weekends to do anything without children! I actually think God has sent you a message to spend more time at home! Now you can join the rest of us sitting on the couch albeit for a second to tie a pair of kleats before you have to drive some child 1 hour away to a soccer game, followed by some dreaded fast food with the team, only to race back home to meet the rest of the family at the other child's lacrosse game, make small talk with the parents and coach, gather everyone back into the car, diffuse a few arguments because everyone is so exhausted from the day, get home, walk the dogs, feed the dogs, review tomorrow's activities, somehow manage to get the kids to bed, and spend 5 minutes talking to your wife before you pass out! See what you've been missing? Welcome to the "dark side" Keating!
We are sending good vibes from New Jersey! Praying for a speedy recovery! Hang up the helmet for a while and relax. It's amazing once you slow down you have the opportunity to appreciate EVERYTHING!
    We love you Speed Racer!

  15. Hey Jamie,

I once met an American hippie chick in Athens who wore her boxer shorts twice on each side. (She announced this while drinking beer to a table full of backpackers.) That was fairly gnarly, but your method of acquiring a matching set of skid marks puts hers to shame.

  18. oh and to those other than Jamie, please DONT judge what he was doing.

Life is all about LIVING and from the year I've know Jamie he has found a way to LIVE his life, been huge family guy(one thing ive really admired now that ive started my own) and yet still had time for some occasional personal fun.

We all find pleasure in different things, i think one thing for Jamie was the competitiveness and comradely of all his friends at the track...i know he was one of the guys i really enjoyed being around on my weekends at the track!

Thanks Jamie for making 7-8 wknds a year a BLAST with ya!

  19. Hi Jamie -
I was watching the race from turn 9 bleachers - saw you and Gogo and your bikes tumbling - ouch! I got run over at Sears Pt in turn 5 back in 1991 - after I recovered I quit racing for the first time. Didn't race again until 2007. Glad to read you're OK - the body will heal, take your time.
Best wishes from your new Formula 40 friend,
    Nick Hayman.

  23. Geeze Jamie, Seeing those pictures of you in the hospital brings back vivid memories of seeing you dressed as a nurse at Karlsrud's party. You looked great then and now. There are just a few things missing - your shot glasses and your tequila holster. I can see that you are being cared for very well. I think you might get addicted to all this attention. We love you! 25. Dear Jamie,

Our best wishes for a speedy and healthy recovery. I saw your Facebook page and knew that you had taken up racing with your typical Keating enthusiasm, questioned your Why but felt it was Jamie. I think I may have posted for you to get an Aflac accident policy. I should have insisted.

We send our love and our prayers for a healthy and speedy recovery.

    Much Love Fred and Melissa

  27. Jamie,

Get Tom to help with the grooming, your 5 o'clock shadow needs some up keep (as he doesn't want to help with some other body cleaning duties - the least thing he can do is give you a proper shave). Let me know if you want some books to read, I have some spec books that will help with the sleeping situation.

  28. Hey Chatty Cathy (or was it P... La La),

Since you are just laying around ogling the staff and drooling on your brother Tom maybe its time to put some thought into the Alameda Great Race in Sept. (don't think this little accident is getting you out of helping pull that off this year).

So how about as an event. You can be the Jack Nicholson character in One Flew over the Coo Coo's Nest in a wheel chair inside the Alameda Hospital waiting room and the teams have to find you there, drink a IV Bottle full of beer (or other substitute), then dress in nurses outfits and push - P... La La around the hosp. parking lot (1 lap - with a simulate crash (just for old times sake) and then complete the lap back to the main desk and give your poor tired bones a well rounded hospital meal of mush (probably not getting much in you as on you ).

I can help if needed - try and "borrow" a wheel chair when you leave, have Tom put it in his truck, get your sister to hit up the locker room on your floor for the nurses outfits and I am sure Mr. K. can find a suitable IV bottle and stand and your lovely bride Gail can make a batch of suitable beverage to fill it when the time comes.

Just to get you thinking - as all the photo's I see you are just laying about - put that mind back to good use or its going to look like the breakfast Tom slected for you when you were sleeping.

    More tomorrow.

    Ken

  29. Just found out about your mishap. Can't imagine what you all are going through. Please allow us to do whatever we can to help during this time. A thought; we could help exercise your dog, Big B. You know our Chip is his relative and wouldn't mind a playmate.

Jamie, we wish you a speedy recovery and send our support to Gayle and the rest of your family.

  30. Jamie,
We have never met. I am a friend of your brother Tom's. We have served in the Marine Corps together all over the world. He briefly told me what happened and pointed me to the blog. Please know that my, and many other's, thoughts and prayers are with you during your recovery.
In addition, I think you need to insist that Tom give you that full body bath that your nurse mentioned, and you require, in your time of need. Although it will make him insanely jealous, it will ensure that you have bragging rights over him for the rest of your life. Godspeed!!
    Sincerely,
    Kevin

  33. Jamie,

Just got back to civilization from a stint in Yosemite, or would have written sooner. I suppose this shunt puts off your Isle of Mann run for another year, eh? Too bad, as I was race prepping an AJS 500cc single for you-hadn't found the leather helmet yet, though.

Good luck on your PT, and work the sympathy whenever you can.
